HSM proudly sponsored a team of staff members to run in the annual Intertrust Marathon on December 4, 2016. Harriet Waterhouse, Sarah-Jane Allison, Daniella Booden and Dillion Ebanks all participated in the event. This was the first time for the team and they did exceptionally well during the race. The team was able to complete the marathon in just over five hours.

The HSM Group is proud to welcome Ms. Hilary Brooks to its growing practice. Ms. Brooks recently joined HSM and will be primarily focused on Corporate and Commercial law. She will also be practicing in the areas of property and finance.
Ms. Brooks began her career by obtaining a Bachelors of Arts in Hotel and Hospitality Management from the University of Strathclyde in 2003 and went on to study Law at the University of Liverpool graduating with honours in 2009. Ms. Brooks then undertook the Professional Practice Course from the Cayman Islands Law School in 2010 achieving a commendation. Ms. Brooks was called to the Cayman Islands Bar in 2012 and has been a Notary Public in the Cayman Islands since 2008.

HSM sponsored the HSM Vipers in the Cayman Islands Flag Football Association league over the summer and became the victors of the women’s league. On October 2, 2016 the HSM Vipers were awarded the trophy for their participation and overall performance during the tournament.

On 3 October, 2016 HSM will be moving to 68 Fort Street, in the heart of George Town.
Since opening our doors in 2012, HSM has seen rapid growth and our new premises will accommodate our team of over 50 attorneys, paralegals and support staff.
The HSM Group is comprised of three main entities: HSM Chambers, a full-service law firm; HSM IP, a specialist intellectual property law firm; and HSM Corporate Services which offers Corporate services.

The HSM Group is proud to welcome Ms. Tonicia Williams to its expanding practice. Ms. Williams is a Caymanian attorney who graduated from Kingston University in England in 2009. She joined HSM in July 2016 and she will be primarily focused on civil litigation being an active member of HSM’s debt solutions practice.
Upon joining the HSM group Tonicia noted “I am excited to have joined HSM and looking forward to a rewarding career with the growing firm.”
Ms. Williams began her law career at the Cayman Islands General Attorney Chambers and was called to the Bar in the Cayman Islands in 2014. She has experience in a wide range of diverse civil litigation matters, acting for banks, strata corporations and leading businesses based both in the Cayman Islands and overseas.

The HSM Group has welcomed a new Immigration attorney, Mr. Alastair David. Alastair’s practice focuses primarily on Immigration Law, Employment Law and Litigation.
Alastair practiced as a Barrister in the UK for 10 years before joining HSM and has substantial experience with cases regarding the UK Immigration Rules and associated Acts, asylum claims, the Points Based Visas scheme, deportations, applications for leave to enter and leave to remain, indefinite leave to remain, visit visa applications, and bail applications.
Mr. David’s diverse legal expertise includes advising on a wide range of employment matters including: Race, Disability, Sex discrimination, unfair dismissal, matters arising from Protected Disclosure, breach of contract, and equal pay. His experience further involves civil practice areas which include: personal injury, breach of contract, credit hire agreements, fraudulent personal injury claims, landlord and tenant claims and building disputes.
Partner, Nicolas Joseph explains: “We look forward to Alastair working with us. His expertise will offer great value to our clients and also to those prospective clients seeking experienced legal practitioners to assist with their immigration needs and queries.”
The HSM Group has added a new dispute resolution attorney, Mr. Kerrie Cox, to its expanding practice. Mr. Cox, a highly regarded attorney in the jurisdiction is bringing his experience to the commercial sector at HSM Chambers.
Kerrie (a qualified mediator) practiced as a Barrister in the UK for 12 years, he was admitted as an attorney in the Cayman Islands in 2010. He spent two years with a local law firm before leaving the islands in 2012 to join a niche family practice in Gibraltar. In 2013 he left the practice to serve as Principal Crown Counsel in the British Virgin Islands and then returned to the Cayman Islands in 2015.
In his role at HSM, Kerrie will undertake a wide spectrum of general dispute work: commercial and civil litigation, trusts, corporate, employment, judicial review, personal injury and family matters, including divorce and private/public child law. He is an active member of the newly formed Cayman Islands Family Law Bar Association.

The battle for telecommunications market share in the Caribbean between LIME and Digicel entered the realm of sports recently in Jamaica, demonstrating a good example of a controversial tactic sometimes known as ambush marketing.
The incident took place on the final day of the ISSA-GraceKennedy Boys and Girls Athletic Championships track meet when, after winning the 200-meter final, high school track star Michael O’Hara lifted his team jersey to reveal a red and green undershirt printed with the words “Be Extraordinary,” Digicel’s tagline.
That same day, Digicel announced O’Hara had signed as its newest brand ambassador; an infuriating tactic for Digicel’s competitor, LIME, which had paid to be an official sponsor of the prestigious track meet. To read more about this story, click here.
